AAC refers to any method of communication that helps or replaces spoken words. It can be used by individuals who have difficulty speaking and/or being understood. AAC includes “low tech” and “high tech” tools. “Low tech” can refer to language boards with use of pictures or symbols and or single switch devices. High tech tools are speech generating devices such as the use of an iPad application (TouchChat, Proloquo2go, TDsnap). When an individual touches the picture or icon, the device then speaks for him/her. This requires a speech pathologist to conduct an AAC evaluation in order to determine which application is most appropriate and at what level.
